The University of Surrey student channel "Surrey Software" present how they are able to provide their students with any Windows app, on demand, on and off campus.

University of Surrey Presents Surrey Software - Video Transcription

The university has loads of specialist software. You can now stream directly to your own Windows computer, on or off campus. The software is called Surrey Software and can be accesses by visiting surreysoftware.surrey.ac.uk. And in this video, we will show you how to get started.

When you visit the website, you’ll be asked to login with your university account. You will then be presented with a list of software, the most popular of which are MATLAB and SPSS. The exact list will depend on your course and which country you are accessing the system from. Not all the licenses are valid outside the UK. You will notice, next to each piece of software, there is either an option, “Download,” “Visit Site,” or “Launch”.

Download will start the software downloading to your computer, after which, you will store it like a normal application. Visit Site allows you to download the software directly from the developer and then install it as before. Launch is the exciting option, which lets you stream the software to your computer without having to launch it. Before you can launch any software, however, you need to install the Application Jukebox player from the link at the top of the page. It is through this application the streaming happens, but it is only for Windows computers. It currently works on Windows 7 and Windows 8 will be supported soon [now used on Windows 10].

Once the player is installed, clicking Launch next to the software you want to start will start the player up and the streaming process. The progress bar can be seen from the player application and once it is complete, the software you wanted will launch. Because this streaming software doesn’t need installing, you don’t need to worry about license codes. This has all been taken care of for you. Once you have streamed the software once, it will then appear in the Start menu like all your other programs, so you don’t even have to visit the Surrey Software every single time.

More software is being added all the time, however, so do check the list every now and then. I’m Tom and you’re watching StagTV.
