Loyalist College, Ontario were previously distributing software using Microsoft's SCCM, which was too time-consuming and inconsistent to provide a long-term and reliable method of delivering software to students and faculty.

With around 2000 lab desktops to deliver to alongside student devices, Loyalist sought a robust and versatile solution which would permit a consistent experience whilst supporting a universal support model for these machines; they were looking to both increase IT efficiency and available resources whilst delivering a better software service to their students.

We visited Loyalist to discuss how AppsAnywhere has been key in solving this challenge, from a smooth and supported implementation to seamless rollout and acceptance from students and faculty. With around 15,000 students to support, it was imperative that their new delivery technology integrated with complete coherence. AppsAnywhere to me is a meaningful distribution method for getting consistency in the software, having it everywhere, and having it when people want it.

Loyalist College is situated in the city of Belleville, which is about two hours east of Toronto and we have three satellite locations as well in Belleville, Bancroft, and Port Hope, Ontario. We have 3,000 full-time students and about 12,000 part-time enrolled in a variety of programs, including Health Sciences, Applied Sciences, Business, and Skilled Trades and Technology.

So, we have about 2,000 lab computers and those are all desktop computers, but we do support student devices as well. So, if they wanna bring their own laptops, then we will install AppsAnywhere on it as well.

I initially saw AppsAnywhere at an IT conference that I was at. One of the other colleges was presenting it and when she demonstrated the AppsAnywhere, I knew right then it would be a game-changer for us at Loyalist. We looked at different software delivery models in the past and I knew AppsAnywhere was much different than that and it would improve our efficiencies in IT, but most importantly, it would improve student access to software that they needed.

So, distributing software previously has been done with SCCM. It just took so much time to do. So, we would usually give ourselves three to four months during the summer months. We were looking for a way to shorten that amount of time, to make it more consistent so that we could have the same software in all of our labs.

The implementation process was relatively smooth. We had lots of support from AppsAnywhere in that. The true test that made me nervous in the process was the load and it worked out really well. There was no issues at all.

So, our size of our image now with AppsAnywhere is about 10 GB and all we've really got on it is Microsoft Office and everything else is through Cloudpaging and it runs very well. The benefits that Cloudpaging provides is the ability for us to afford to expand our software base and to actually get some reporting on it so we know what software is used and whether we need more licenses or less licenses for a piece of software. So, in the end, it ends up being a financial benefit as well.

I think AppsAnywhere has improved the student experience because they now have opportunity to use software anywhere or anytime they need to.

We have had some feedback. Of course, we've only been using the software for a few months now. We knew that the students would get it. And they're used to an app store. But faculty, we thought was a whole 'nother ball game, but when we introduced the concept to them early on, they were very excited for it right off the bat. And actually going live with it all, faculty has barely said anything, which is, in our world, is a very good thing.
